September 1, 2023: Valencia, Spain - Valencia's Victuals: A Journey through Paella's BirthplaceÂ
Goodbye, Barcelona. Hello, Valencia! 🌊
From the artistic streets of Barcelona, I have made my way to Valencia—the birthplace of paella and a haven for anyone enamored with Spanish cuisine. As I stepped off the train, I could already sense that Valencia was going to offer something genuinely special. With its radiant Mediterranean climate, lush gardens, and intricate architecture, this city effortlessly marries the old with the new.
But, let's talk food.
To say that Valencia is the 'Paella Capital' might be putting it lightly. This culinary masterpiece doesn't just occupy menus; it occupies hearts. Prepared with love and an assortment of fresh local ingredients—ranging from rabbit and chicken to green beans and saffron—the Valencian paella is a sensory fiesta. Cooked in a wide, shallow pan over an open flame, the dish becomes more than a meal; it becomes a social event.
Beyond paella, Valencia spoils you with its offerings—horchata, a cold and sweet beverage made from tiger nuts, to fartons, elongated sugary pastries perfect for dipping. There's a pulse to this place, a rhythmic beat orchestrated by clinking forks and satisfied sighs.
As for my digs in Valencia, I'm staying in an antique apartment in the heart of the city, overlooking a bustling marketplace. Waking up to the chirps of traders and the scent of fresh oranges has made each morning in Valencia an experience to savor.
Until our next culinary escapade,
