October 6, 2023: Morelia, Mexico: Michoacán Munchies - The Sweet and Savory of Morelia

From the lively streets of Guadalajara, my Tulum Table tour has steered me towards the heart of Michoacán — the enchanting city of Morelia. If Guadalajara's tequila had my spirit dancing, Morelia's culinary scene has my taste buds waltzing.

Flanked by baroque buildings and stone-paved pathways, Morelia hides its culinary gems amidst the colonial charm. My first stop? The bustling local markets. As I meandered through, the fragrance of sizzling carnitas — slow-cooked pork, browned to perfection — led me to a crowded stall. Surrounded by locals, I took a bite and understood the crowd. The meat was tender, flavorful, and simply melted in the mouth. A true testament to Michoacán's legacy as the 'carnitas capital' of Mexico.

But Morelia is not just about savory delights. The city's sweet side is equally captivating. Venturing into the older parts of the town, I stumbled upon artisans crafting candied fruits. From pineapples to figs, these fruits, crystallized in sugar, were vibrant and glistening. Sampling them was like tasting Morelia's history — sweet, rich, and layered.

And as I continue my journey through Mexico, every bite and sip I take forms a part of the mosaic that is the Tulum Table. Morelia, with its harmonious blend of traditional recipes and innovative flavors, contributes its own unique shade to this tapestry.

Morelia reminds me that every city, every dish, has a story to tell. And I'm here to listen, taste, and share it with all of you.
