December 19, 2023: Reykjavik, Iceland - Reykjavik Radiance: Yule Lads & Aurora Wonders
As my European Christmas journey draws to a close, Reykjavik welcomes me with its crisp air and the promise of nature’s most enchanting light show. The anticipation of witnessing the Northern Lights in this land of fire and ice adds a layer of excitement to the festive season.
Here in Reykjavik, the folklore of the mischievous Yule Lads comes to life, adding a touch of whimsy to the city's holiday charm. These thirteen trolls, each with their unique quirks, are said to visit children across Iceland in the days leading up to Christmas, leaving gifts for the well-behaved and playing tricks on the not-so-lucky ones.
As I wander through the city, the scent of smoked lamb and the warm aroma of 'laufabrauð' or leaf bread, a traditional Christmas flatbread, fill the air. The locals welcome me with open arms and open tables, inviting me to sample 'hangikjöt' and 'hákarl', showcasing Iceland's culinary boldness. The 'hangikjöt', smoked lamb, is tender and richly infused with the smokiness of the Icelandic birch, while 'hákarl', fermented shark, challenges my palate with its strong flavor — a true testament to the Viking spirit that still runs deep in Icelandic veins.
At the harborside, I indulge in 'plokkfiskur', a hearty fish stew that warms me to the core against the biting Icelandic chill. The fish, caught from the bountiful North Atlantic waters, is fresh and flaky, melding perfectly with the creamy sauce and potatoes. It's a dish that captures the simplicity and purity of Icelandic cuisine.
Dipping into the geothermal lagoons, I reflect on the past weeks — the twinkling lights of Salzburg, the festive bustle of Nuremberg, the gingerbread delights of Strasbourg, and now, the serene beauty of Reykjavik. Each city painted its own unique stroke on the canvas of this journey, leaving me with a mosaic of memories to cherish.
As I prepare to head back to the States, I carry with me not just souvenirs and recipes but stories and friendships that span across this diverse continent. Europe's Christmas magic, from Alpine peaks to icy Nordic shores, has etched itself into my heart, reminding me that the joy of the season lies in the warmth of its people and the flavors of its lands.
With a heart full of gratitude and a mind full of tales, I bid farewell to Reykjavik's radiant shores, knowing that the spirit of this Christmas adventure will flicker brightly within me, just like the auroras I've come to adore.
Until we meet again,
Buster Vanray 🌟🎄🇪🇪
