December 29, 2023: Lancaster, Pennsylvania: Lancaster's Amish Awe - Simplicity and Serenity in Pennsylvania

After the whirlwind of Christmas with the Pittsburgh Vanrays, I found myself seeking solace and simplicity. Thus, my journey led me to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a place where time seems to slow down, and life's complexities are met with serene simplicity.

The rolling hills and farmlands of Lancaster, inhabited by the Amish community, are a stark contrast to the bustling streets and opulent gatherings of Pittsburgh. Here, life moves at the rhythm of horse-drawn carriages and the sound of windmills. The air is fresher, the skies clearer, and the food, a reflection of the unpretentious yet profound lifestyle of the Amish people.

My culinary exploration began with a hearty breakfast of 'Scrapple,' a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch dish. Made from pork scraps and cornmeal, it was pan-fried to a crisp and served with fresh eggs from a local farm. The simplicity of the dish, yet the depth of its flavors, was a comforting start to my day.

Lunch was a delightful spread at an Amish family's home. Homemade bread, garden-fresh vegetables, and a 'Chicken Corn Soup' that was nothing short of heartwarming. Each bite was a reminder of the importance of community, family, and the joys of sharing a meal made with love and care.

As I roamed the quiet streets of Lancaster, stopping by small shops selling handmade quilts and woodwork, I stumbled upon a quaint bakery. The aroma of freshly baked 'Whoopie Pies' was irresistible. These soft, cake-like cookies sandwiching a creamy filling were a sweet embodiment of Lancaster's charm.

Reflecting on my time in Lancaster, I realized how easy it is to get lost in the complexities of life, especially coming from a background like mine. The Amish community, with their strong values and simple living, offered a refreshing perspective. Their connection to the essentials of life – faith, family, and food – was a powerful reminder of what truly matters.

As I left Lancaster, I carried with me the serenity I found in its simplicity. It was a reminder that sometimes, amidst life's chaos, we need to step back and appreciate the simple joys – a lesson I plan to carry into the new year.
