July 21, 2023: Normandy, France - Moules à la Normande: Normandy's Mussels Marvel
Bonjour, mes amis! A week that began in the bustling City of Lights, found a tranquil and savory conclusion in the maritime splendor of Normandy. Land of Camembert, Calvados, and the apple-laden plains, Normandy offers a culinary heritage as rich as the fertile soils it's known for. Today, we set our palates on the marvel of Normandy's mussels, the delectable Moules à la Normande.
A new day welcomed us with the crisp, salty air of the English Channel as we strolled through the storybook town of Honfleur. With its half-timbered houses mirroring off the tranquil old port, our quest for Normandy's famed mussels led us to a tucked-away café, whispered to serve some of the best seafood in the region.
An aroma of the sea enveloped us as the Moules à la Normande were presented in a rustic pot, radiating warmth, brimming with mussels swimming in a broth where creaminess met the subtly fruity cider. The mussels, plump and tender, had been delicately cooked with shallots, garlic, and a sprinkle of parsley, harmoniously uniting the ocean's essence with the land's sweetness and dairy richness.
With each spoonful came an epiphany - the succulence of the mussels, the creamy broth carrying hints of tart, sweet apple cider, and a whisper of herbs painting the backdrop.
