December 8, 2023: Strasbourg, France - Strasbourg Sparkle: ‘Capital of Christmas’ & Alsatian Aromas
Greetings from Strasbourg, the 'Capital of Christmas'! As I continue my festive journey through Europe's enchanting Christmas towns, I find myself utterly captivated by Strasbourg's illuminated charm. Nestled along the Rhine River, this city seamlessly blends French elegance with German warmth, creating a holiday experience like no other.
Meandering through the medieval streets, adorned with twinkling lights and festive décor, it's impossible not to be swept up in the spirit of the season. The Strasbourg Christmas market, Christkindelsmärik, is a wonderland of holiday delights, with its origins dating back to 1570, making it one of the oldest in Europe.
As I stroll through the market, the air is filled with the aroma of mulled wine and spiced treats. The iconic Alsatian culinary traditions are on full display here. I indulged in the local delicacy of Tarte flambée - a thin, crispy crust topped with fromage blanc, onions, and lardons, embodying the rustic simplicity of Alsatian cuisine. Another must-try was Choucroute garnie, a hearty dish of sauerkraut paired with a variety of sausages and other salted meats, a true reflection of the region's German influence.
But the culinary star of my Strasbourg adventure was undoubtedly the Baeckeoffe. This slow-cooked casserole, made with potatoes, onions, mutton, beef, and pork marinated in white wine and juniper berries, was a symphony of flavors that warmed me to the core - a perfect foil to the crisp winter air.
In Strasbourg, every corner holds a story, every cobblestone street a piece of history. As I wander beneath the shadow of the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral, I am reminded of the enduring spirit of Christmas and the joy it brings to hearts around the world.
Join me as I continue to explore the festive wonders of Europe, with each town weaving its own unique spell of holiday magic.
With warmth and joy,
Buster Vanray 🎄✨
