November 17, 2023: Siem Reap, Cambodia - Angkor Awakenings: Ancient Temples & Cambodian Cuisine

Hello, my culinary adventurers! Today, I find myself in the enchanting city of Siem Reap, Cambodia. After a month-long journey in Vietnam, which left an indelible mark on my heart, I confess there's a hint of nostalgia as I reminisce about the vibrant streets of Hanoi and the serene sunsets of Phu Quoc. Yet, Cambodia beckons with its own mystical allure, and I am thrilled to delve into the depths of Khmer culture and cuisine.

The day began with a mesmerizing sunrise over Angkor Wat. As the first rays of sun pierced the morning mist, the ancient stones of this majestic temple complex seemed to come alive, whispering secrets of a bygone era. Wandering through these historic corridors, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of connection to the past.

But let's talk about the heart of my journey: the food. Cambodian cuisine, or Khmer cuisine, is a beautiful tapestry of flavors, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors. My first foray into this delightful world was with a simple yet flavorful dish called "Fish Amok." This steamed curried fish, served in banana leaves, was a delicate blend of coconut milk and traditional Khmer spices, creating a harmonious symphony on my palate.

Lunch was an exploration in itself. I savored a bowl of "Nom Banh Chok," also known as Khmer noodles. This popular breakfast dish, served cold, consisted of rice noodles topped with fragrant green fish gravy and fresh vegetables. The balance of flavors and textures was a refreshing experience under the Cambodian sun.

As the day progressed, I indulged in "Bai Sach Chrouk" - grilled pork served over steamed rice, with a side of pickled vegetables. The pork, marinated in coconut milk and garlic, was tender, flavorful, and perfectly grilled, making every bite a delightful experience.

Dinner was a celebration of Siem Reap's street food. At a bustling night market, I tried "Lort Cha," a stir-fried noodle dish with vegetables and egg, seasoned with a unique blend of Cambodian spices. It was the perfect end to a day filled with discovery and culinary treasures.

Siem Reap, with its awe-inspiring temples and understated yet rich cuisine, promises to be a chapter filled with wonder and delicious revelations. As I continue my journey through Cambodia, I look forward to uncovering more culinary gems and sharing these experiences with you.
